Outsource XR Development to Sri Lanka: 5 Essential Checks

If you want to outsource XR development to Sri Lanka from Europe, three worries come up in almost every conversation: the time difference, who owns the work, and what happens to personal data. This guide covers all three, plus delivery and invoicing, with a checklist you can use with any studio, including us.

One note first: this is practical guidance, not legal advice. Have your own counsel review contracts and data-protection terms.

Outsource XR Development to Sri Lanka: 5 Checks Before You Sign

1. Time zone overlap

Sri Lanka is UTC+5:30 and does not change its clocks. Central Europe is 3.5 hours behind in summer and 4.5 hours behind in winter, and European clocks change on 25 October 2026. A call at 1:00 pm in Sri Lanka is 9:30 am in Central Europe in summer and 8:30 am in winter. A call at 6:00 pm in Sri Lanka is 2:30 pm in summer and 1:30 pm in winter.

If the studio works a normal 9 to 6 day, that leaves roughly four to five hours of shared working time. Ask any studio which hours its team covers, agree a standing weekly call, and put response times in writing.

2. Contract and IP ownership

Most problems in outsourced projects come from vague contracts, not from geography. Make sure yours covers:

  • Assignment of intellectual property to you once you have paid
  • Delivery of source code and assets to a repository you own
  • Scope and acceptance criteria for each milestone
  • A clear process for change requests
  • Confidentiality terms
  • Governing law and how disputes are resolved

3. Data protection

Sri Lanka is outside the European Economic Area, so under the GDPR it is a third country. If the studio will handle personal data, you need a lawful transfer mechanism. That means an adequacy decision where one applies, and otherwise safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses, adopted in 2021, together with a data processing agreement. Check the Commission’s published adequacy list for the current position.

Sri Lanka also has its own GDPR-style law, the Personal Data Protection Act of 2022, which is being phased in. According to Sri Lankan law firm commentary, key provisions commence on 1 January 2027.

The simplest protection is to avoid the question. Most XR development needs no personal data. Use test data instead of real customer or user records, limit access, and keep the code in your own repository. If your project does involve personal data, such as user accounts, analytics or training records, put the data processing agreement and Standard Contractual Clauses into the contract before work starts.

4. How work is delivered and reviewed

Ask for milestone-based delivery with a working build every one to two weeks, so you can see progress in a headset instead of in a report. Insist on one named point of contact, and start with a small paid pilot before committing to a large scope.

5. Invoicing, currency and tax

Agree the currency, payment terms and milestone schedule up front. We can invoice through our Canadian business if that suits your finance team. Check the VAT and withholding treatment for services bought from outside the EU with your own adviser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to outsource XR development to Sri Lanka?

It can be, if your contract covers IP ownership, data protection terms and milestone-based delivery. Most XR development needs no personal data, which lowers the risk further.

What is the time difference between Sri Lanka and Europe?

Sri Lanka is 3.5 hours ahead of Central Europe in summer and 4.5 hours ahead in winter, because Sri Lanka does not change its clocks.

Does the GDPR apply when working with a studio in Sri Lanka?

If personal data is transferred outside the EEA, you need a lawful transfer mechanism, usually Standard Contractual Clauses and a data processing agreement unless an adequacy decision applies. The transfer rules do not apply to data that is not personal data, such as test data.

Who owns the code when you outsource XR development?

That depends on your contract. Make sure it assigns intellectual property to you and delivers the source code and assets to a repository you own.

Data protection points based on the European Data Protection Board guidance on international transfers and Sri Lankan law firm commentary on the Personal Data Protection Act. Time differences use Central European Time (UTC+1) and Central European Summer Time (UTC+2). Rules change, so check current requirements before you outsource XR development to Sri Lanka.
